Hello, i`m new on this forum so thank you for those who try to help me. My problem is like this...my switching power supply got mad and burned my mainboard, hdd and cd-rw..cpu and ram got away..anyway i fixed the supply, buyed a new mainboard and cd-rw but i want my information back from hard drive! The problem with the hdd was that the motor drive got burned, like smoke&stuff, rest seems ok, there is no low impedance on 5 or 12V on the hdd`s pcb(if i power it up, nothing happens). I opened the hdd carefully, the head looks ok, the amplifier is soldered on the head`s circuit but is sticked with adhesive so no way of changeing it if it needs to. I took from someone a pcb of an 80GB WD hdd, don`t remember if it was same model/serial, but the motor started, and almost when it reached full speed the heads went "clank", engine stopped, after that started again and again clank, and so on...., of course no bios detection. Some hi-res pictures here(download for better view):

-please tell me if the "alternative_pcb" would fit, after my oppinion it does, above 90% for sure, am i right?
-and if i mount the alternative pcb and the hdd makes the "clank" noise, what choices do i have?
Thank you!

Hi,

It is possible U made an easily recoverable HD unrecoverable by opening it, I see some particles and some contamination on the surface of the parking track too.
Now the best U can do is to let some expert do this recovery, since even if U can make a good PCB out of the two U have, the clean area needs to be treated properly, probably the heads have to be replaced as well.
sorry.

So do you think the amplifier and the heads are damaged too? If i change the PCB is it mandatory to change the ROM from the original PCB to the donor one?

Hi,

yes, changing ROM is neccessary (probably), but even then the contamination will not do any good to the head and what's worse it may damage the platter itself.
that's why I say it is not an easy case anymore.

I did not powered up the hdd after i opened up so no scratches are present on the platters. I can clean the dust with pressurized air, think it will do the trick?

Well, last night i changed the PCB from an identical donor, switched the rom on to the new board from the old one. The hdd seems to do the self test, the usual sound when heads are moving, but after 4 seconds it does the "clank" sound and in half minute it shuts down the motor. There is no identification in bios, in fact the system hangs. Any ideeas?

Hi,

at least one head has probably crashed or is contaminated by the stuff that was on the parking track. That's what I was speaking about when I told the drive needs to be cleaned.
:(

 so the most likely problem that head needs to be replaced..i was thinking that is more of a problem from the hdd`s system area since he is trying to do the self test but when it`s almost ready(i know how he sounded when it was working)he does the "clank" thing
