This drive has one head that is mounted on the bottom of the platter, so a head (i.e. platter) swap should be easy, right?

I had a drive that clicked about 6 times and spun down. I swapped the platter with a suitable donor drive, used the same PCB, etc, but no change in symptoms.

To check I put the good platter into the bad HDA unit - no go. I then put the good platter back into the good donor and it clicked, too.

Inspection of the original platter revealed some knicks on the inside tracks - probably enough to kill the new heads.

I used the standard precautions when swapping platters; I torqued the retaining ring in a cross pattern, etc.

Questions:

1. I assume that the bad platter killed the good heads. Could something else have killed them, i.e. are there any special precautions when working with this kind of Samsung drive?

2. Is it "normal" to have a shadowy, slightly grainy ring about 3-4 mm thick on the platter near the spindle? Or is this a likely indicator of wear / damage?

Hy does u platter patient had a head crash or only scratch´s at some zones?

If u have a head crash, on wich position is it? l , when u did the platter swap, did u get DRDY DSC

The head looks OK. There are scratches or pits on the surface near the center of the platter, but there are no major rings. It is hard to be 100% sure if there was a head crash.

Either the DSC or DRDY light came on after I changed the head (I don't recall which without starting the PC), but the drive never came ready.

Hi,

U haven't mentioned wether the original platter has damages or not.
the stripe on the inner diameter U are asking about is the landing zone. It is made so that head won't stick to the platter.
