Hello,

You may want to try some suggestions from our FAQ (a sticky topic in this forum) - you can try and perform erasing the entire surface.

If you post SMART Attributes status then we can say more.

Thank you for the reply. I did read the FAQ several times. It says that if ERASE doesn't help then run SCAN with REMAP option switched on. Unfortunately, it doesn't say anywhere how to turn on the REMAP option. Could you please tell me which command does it? I am running MHDD from a bootable CD.

I ran ERASE. After that, I ran another SCAN, and here are the new results:

<3ms: 73569
<10ms: 232911
<50ms: 34
<150ms: 17
<500ms:
>500ms:
?=TIME -
X=UNC -
!=ABRT -
S=IDNF -
A=AMNF -
0=TONF -
*=BBK -

Also, here are my SMART Attributes after the last scan:

Name Val Worst Raw
1: Read error rate 200 187 0
3: Spin up time 93 91 2716
4: Number of spin-up times 96 96 4958
5: Reallocated sectors count 196 196 57
7: Seek error rate 200 195 4
9: Power-on time 90 90 7788
10: Spin-up retries 100 100 0
11: Calibration retries 95 95 12
12: Start/stop count 96 96 4859
196: Reallocate event count 177 177 23
197: Current pending sectors 200 200 0
198: Offline scan UNC sectors 200 200 5
199: Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate 200 200 113766
200: Write error rate 198 198 35

Should I try to reinstall WIndows XP now? Or should I do something else with my hard drive? Any advise is really appreciated.

After the erase, you have no more bad sectors, so this is good news :)

According to SMART, I would not trust this hard drive anymore. Since you did not provide the exact model number of the hard drive in question, it is impossible to tell more...
