I am trying to scan a Hitachi 20 G laptop hard drive using USB mode on my desktop. It hung up. Then I erased the entire disk. It took several hours but it did the job. Then I tried to scan it. It hung up again. Is there anything I can do?

Try with enabling 'remap' in the scan options.

Tried that. No dice. Frustrated, I tried a simple Format in windows. Wonder of wonders, it worked. The drive now reads and writes all files, with almost full capacity. Can someone explain why?

Probably the NTFS filesystem mapped away the bad sectors and not the drive itself.
Does chkdsk tell you about bad sectors?
