Clicking Samsung and Maxtor disks with BAD sectors

October 30th, 2007, 7:48

I have seen many of these disks which all appear to be good in MHDD, but on trying to recover the disks click constantly but the clicking is because of bad sectors not bad heads. The samsungs are all spinpoints (eg. SP1604N) and Maxtors are all models starting 6V (eg. 6V160E0). So far I have recovered these using Media Tools and restarting the image at a different LBA each time it starts clicking, R-Studio by just persisting and being patient, and image with Data Extractor without CRC. I am waiting for Deepspar Disk Imager to arrive, I hope this will be better also.

How does everyone else deal with these failures? Would be interested to see if I am missing something.

Thanks

Jump over bad head + Soft reset.

I performed head swap and got 100% data. I was not sure about Head Swap at first because MHDD will scan the disk 100% with no errors, but obviously the heads were damaged bacause head swap wa ssuccessful. Why is this?
