what's the best/safe way to clean fingerprints off the platter?

I usually disconnect the headstack, power on the drive and use piece of soft cloth to wipe off the fingerprints.

Same here as Starling. Use microfiber cloth.

Any solvent? Alcohol?

I never use liquids for that; clean-room wipes do the job.
