ok hi peopless , im pretty new to this data recovery thing, but ive recovered bout 600 GB of information from what i was told was unrecoverable media which i was pretty chuffed with. this was all from hardrives that obviously still were working enuf for me to eventually access them and recover the stuff. but ive bin given a seagate momentus 4200.2 that my computer jus will not recognise no matter wot i do....

if i connect it via a 2.5" adapter via usb to my computer, i get power to the drive and i hear it spin up, but then it will make like a repeating scraping sound, almost a revving of an engine sound that jus keep going for eternity :D

anyway, sorry if sound vague, maybe someone can help with wot that might be. im dying to crack it open (of course im describing that in a slightly harsher way than i would actually do) ;) can anybody give me some advice on how to narrow the problem down and how to go about replacing parts to get the things working if possible

thanks guys in advance, i appreciate any info

:D

Hi,
The scraping sound you hear is probably comming from a faulty head.
You will need a cleanroom to determ if the head (s) is gone or not.
To change heads you'll need a drive of same model and site-code.

This is a very hard drive to recover from. It's definitely for the pros, and not all of them can do a good job with these. If you really need the data, don't attempt to fix it yourself.

thanks guys for the tips, actually, mrspokk, after i read your reply, i foned the guy up who has given it to me and i told him that he would hav to take it to a pro to get it opened up and checked, like u had said, but he said to me not to bother as the data is not that vital, and he had already taken it to someone and they were gona charge him an arm n a leg. anyway, i get the feeling that hes disgarded it now, i thort he was pretty serious at first but jus seems to want to leave it. but he said i can keep the drive :D so if i can fix it i can hav it...

so even tho i aint got a cleanroom as such, i wana try n see if i can find the problem, i myt aswell, considering its useless now. but dont wana do anythin stupid, so does anybody know a gud technique for checking this drive? or the process of opening it up safely etc (as i actually got excited n took the screws outa the top to lift the lid, which of course dint come off, so ive put the screws bak in coz i got scared :( )

can anyone help me? :D mrspokk, id love to try find out if the head has gone as you mentioned, but dont wana completely destroy it, can you offer any help with gettin to the heart of this thing??

thanks guys

:D

Hi,
If you don't need the data on it, and just want to fix it to use drive?...don't bother.
The time and cost for buying a donordrive going to cost you more than actually buying a new one!
But you can keep it and maby find a suitable donor with a faulty pcb or so later on.
And you can always have it as an training drive, to checkout ,unscrew the heads and feel how things work.
Here is also a good start if you want to do a headstack replacement:
http://hddguru.com/content/en/articles/ ... k-Q-and-A/

And finding schematics for the electronic in a hdd?? No way....If you don't have a friend or brother that work with the production of harddrives

I have the exact same problem! USB adapter, drive powers on for a bit, then a dull noise showing that the drive is powered on, but Windows will not recognize. I keep thinking that the controller board on this drive is what is bad. Have you been able to find a spare oem drive online somewhere to replace the board? I think that would be the cheaper route to go with instead of taking it to a lab first. I have gotten lucky other times with drives by just replacing the controller board. Seems to take care of the problems. If you find a drive, let me know. If I am able to purchase one or buy one somewhere of the exact model, I'll let you know. Thanks.
