Ticking Western Digital 500GB My Book.

January 12th, 2008, 23:09

I just got in a Western Digital 500GB My Book.
Inside there is a WD5000AAJS SATA drive.

When powered on it spins up,
It makes a few quiet but rapid tic-tic noise (about 3-4 tics/second ) for about 10 seconds then shuts down.

Do you think a new PCB will help or is it a head problem?

It has WD’s new PCB. I do not see any ROM chip (is the ROM on the CPU chip?)

Can any tool (PC3000, Salvation Data etc.) diagnose this drive?

Thanks

We've seen a few of this series with head/mechanical problems & corruption. Yours sounds like it is shutting down because it cannot read track 0.

Attached is a photo of the 500GB My Book PCB

This drive was only a few weeks old when it died.
The customer said he just turned it on one day and it did not work.
If you search on the net there seems to be a bunch of other people with the same problem with this drive.

Salvation Data HDD Dr does not support it.
Does PC3000 support this drive?

PCB swap will not work if there is no ROM to swap and no way to read/write it.

I had a 500GB Hitachi open the other day.
The heads are so tiny. I barely touched it and a head fell off.

Has anybody been able to fix a head problem with these large drives?
