Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts
January 9th, 2008, 12:48
Hi all,
Got an odd problem with one of these old things.
It spins up and ID's OK, with correct s/n etc.
But cannot access ANY LBA's.
When I try to image with DE, it races through very quickly with errors, almost as if there's a password on the drive (which there is not).
Hot swap has no effect.
ANY ideas?
Cheers
Sean

Hi,
post terminal log!
probably one head is dead or weak.

I had one of these last week that did the exact same thing. It was a 60Gb and had one dead head. I was able to read from the other heads with no problem and the surface was undamaged. I would suggest you create a head map and try each head one by one.

Hi ThatDellGuy,
He reported all the sectors are unreadable, I suppose the drive reports ABRT error for all the sectors.
We still need the terminal report to make things clearer.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the reply.
While I try to work out how to get the terminal log out of this thing (any help would be appreciated as my ISA Quantum manual is a bit vague), here's the firmware report. As you can see the roadmap is not loaded...

I think it's sorted now.
Well, it's imaging anyway.
A bit slow, but not too bad
We shall see in the morning!
