No it's a customers of mine, he brought it in with a Lenevo laptop. I'm a tech bud.

Edit: but I see your point, it's good though you guys are keeping it honest, I've seen a lot of posts here that seem quite unscrupulous.

You sound genuine, so sure, it could be - or it could be a stolen laptop, and you're pretending to be a tech, and we're helping someone to get unauthorised access to data. How do we know which is true? Do you see the problem? :) Few people outside the regulars here, really know who the rest of us are...

Anyway, let's put it this way, the legit owner should recognise the password and the important way in which it must be entered, for it to be succcessful. :)

Edited to add: I see you just edited yours after my previous update, so you do sound genuine - but again, isn't this what a thief would also do?! Since my GF had her laptop stolen, this is a sore point for me...

Here's another possibility - you really are a tech, but the "customer" stole the laptop :( In that case, I would say "The password begins with 'd' - does that ring any bells, Mr. Customer?" If he hasn't got a clue, then I would doubt it's his...

Yep, I know what your saying though.

Not much to derive from some simple text on a computer monitor.

Well as long as he pays my boss, so I get my commission, then I have no worries. if not, my Sup can take up legalities with the customer.

But thanks anyways. I appreciate all of your hard work and time. :D

This password is incorrect.

I explained to my customer that he may not be able to get the data from his drive recovered, and he said that would be fine, but not proffered.

He said it's his Laptop and did not steal this system. and he doesn't seem the type to me anyhow, he's in the Marine Corp.

So it's either this, or if anyone knows a way to just wipe the drive all together without saving the data, for a fresh start, I'm open to all suggestions.

There are different ways of entering the password but you have never said which input method you are using. It is worth reading through the thread again or even searching through this and other threads on the same subject and you will see what i mean.

With respect, I believe that statement to be false. IMHO the password given to you by dick is correct - but as I pointed out previously, the customer will likely only be able to use it, when entered in the same way as he set it originally. How can he not know how he set the password (and not recognise that password!), if it's his laptop and he set the password?

Well I tried entering it in hdat2, and mhdd 4.6, and they pop up with either Fail (mhdd) or action cancelled in hdat2.

I wanted to try zu.exe, but the current system I'm working on does not have an Intel chipset on the Main Board.

The customer claims he has no idea how it happened, he said he turned on his Lenevo, it stalled on booting, so he restarted and it was locked up on him.

Either way though, I don't like the situation he's put me in, I have worked for days on his drive, and I think the whole situtation stinks to high heaven. I think I should inform the customer it's not possible, not to mention the simple fact that a drive like this is probably around 40$ to buy brand new and our services are based off of hourly repair and cost and any items being replaced, and I can definitly tell you he's spent more than the cost of a new drive with us and then some.

So I'm gonna call it a dead drive and tell the customer it's a bricked up and see if he'll just purchase one of hours as a replacement.

But thanks guys I really appreciate your help again. You guys are awesome I couldn't have asked for better help on a post. Thanks.

Correct - because neither of those was likely the method which was used to lock the drive.

And so he's claiming that his laptop somehow managed to set a short English word as a hard disk password, as part of a malfunction?! This seems unbelievable, IMHO, given the specific ATA commands which are needed in ordeer to set a drive password.

My opinion (and, of course, that's all it is) remains that, on balance of probabilities, the customer is not the laptop owner (or at the very least, he is not telling the truth about what happened, and is not doing all he could to convince us that he is the owner, thereby leaving the appearance that he isn't).
