It seems wrong. Have you followed correctly the steps for obtaining it ? Please, read again from the start of this thread. Also, does the hdd have only an ATA password, or was it removed from some DVR or similar machine ?

File too small. You need to dump more sectors of module.

As alternative use this instead :

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=33

Detect the correct drive (select PORT) and use the command to clear ATA password.

Download the tool. It will work only on 32 bit windows XP or 7. This is because of the low level access driver. You can use Hiren's Boot CD mini XP if needed.

Now read here this step by step to READ ROM :

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=1127

This will teach you how to properly detect the drive with WDR DEMO.

Instead of using the function to READ/WRITE ROM use the function to CLEAR PASSWORD.

As alternative get something like WDMarvel, pay for license and use the option to remove password. There are also other free alternatives like hddsupertool .... Or you can use the MHDD script to dump another sector of module 02 .... Or you can use WDMarvel DEMO to dump module 02 (even if you don't buy it) .... Or you can use WDMarvel DEMO and select the option to READ CONFIG (either from platter or RAM) and you should see your password there ... etc ... etc ...

I have questions!

1. laptop broke down, Drive had ATA password. I know the SSD password.

2. I have new laptop where I cant use the drive from old broken laptop. It tells me the password is wrong.
So after reading this thread I think I need to do the key scan codes to ASCII translation.
I pasted it below, do I understand it right how to do it? Can someone check it?

3. I cant run MHDD, the password prompt blocks bootup from USB. Cant go past it.
Can I first boot MHDD and than plug in SATA drive? is it safe to plug it in while PC is turned ON?
My laptop is lenovo 700-15isk.
I also have access to dell laptop but the BIOS pass prompt blocks me from booting MHDD

Code:
password   hexKEYcode    --->        ASCII        DEC
l               26                     &           38
i               17                     ETB         23

3               04                     EOT          4

NUM (not sure how old laptop saved password)
1               4F                      O          79
4               4B                      K          75

What can I do to unlock it? (samsung 840 evo)

I believe the following MHDD script should work:

Code:
; send ATA SECURITY DISABLE PASSWORD command to disable password

reset
waitnbsy
regs = $00 $00 $00 $00 $00 $a0 $f6
waitnbsy
checkdrq
sectorsfrom = disablpw.bin

; disablpw.bin must be 0x200 bytes, padded with 0x00

; word 0 = 0x0000 -> compare user pwd
; word 0 = 0x0001 -> compare master pwd

; words 1 - 16 -> 32-byte password

; Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

; 00000000  00 00 26 17 31 31 02 05 09 04 00 00 00 00 00 00
; ........
; 000001F0  00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

Just posting in case this helps someone else.

I had a WD that was locked but after unlocking and disabling the password with MHDD, the drive still appeared locked after reboot, and then couldn't be unlocked anymore.

The drive was a WD800BB-00CAA1 with master password XBOXSCENE (used in an Xbox).

I used MHDD with the dump2 script as found in this thread to get the password before and after unlocking. The password appeared to be gone after unlocking, but the drive still acted locked and wouldn't let me see the files on it. Someone else on this forum had the same problem however their drive died so they gave up on it. Maybe there are others in the same boat who need help.

I did manage to get the drive unlocked through trial and error, and here's what did it for me:
  • I used HDAT2 (v6.0 beta 5) instead of MHDD.
  • I went into a menu and used the option to dump the password from WD drives (Commands Menu, I think? I'll have to double check and edit this later). That dump function appears to work the same as a couple of the MHDD scripts, but it shows the output right on the screen instead of saving to a file.
  • I went into the Security Menu and after pressing down to go to the next item in the menu, I noticed the red options (Set Password, etc) suddenly turned white. So I set the master password back to XBOXSCENE. The trick, though, seems to be that you also need to set the user password. So I set that to XBOXSCENE as well.
  • I rebooted and went back into HDAT2.
  • I went into the Security menu and unlocked the drive using both the master and user passwords.
  • In the same menu, I disabled both the master and user passwords.
  • I rebooted and went back into HDAT2, and the drive now showed as unlocked!

The first time I noticed that I could set the password, after using the password dump function, I only set the master password. Then I rebooted, went back in, unlocked and disabled the master password, and rebooted. However, that put me back at square one, where I was after using MHDD. So as I said, definitely set the user password as well as the master password.

I think this would work from MHDD as well. I suspect that if you run the dump scripts and then tried to set the password, MHDD would allow you to, just like HDAT2 does after dumping.

I've attached a screenshot comparing 42.bin before and after unlocking using MHDD. Figured that might be of some interest as well. I noticed a couple of other differences aside from the password.

If this helps you, let me know!

This is a VERY OLD WDC MCU based drive. This drive is NOT Marvell based so password is stored on module 42 as stated. You can read module by using posted MHDD script or you can learn more here :

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=1490

If you follow the thread you should be able to "learn" how to read/write modules on those drives by VSC.

You can simply read the password, use something like Victoria to unlock the drive and change the password or you can even patch/edit module 42 or replace it with a copy from an unlocked drive ....

For more fun with those drives check - http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=1939 and http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=1766

Funny ....

Latest version should be 3.2.1

At any rate if your drive is a WD modern one (Marvell based) then WDMarvel should be able to handle it just fine :)

You should use Method 2 - Universal.

Even if SA access is locked when ATA password is set WDMarvel should be able to handle the password removal without any problem.

Also if SA access is locked most of the times RAM access will not be locked (and still allowed) so one could still use WDMarvel to check config on RAM and read password or even edit it on RAM. If password is edited on RAM and saved to RAM the standard ATA commands to unlock the drive and to remove the password will work by accepting the "new" password (on RAM) even if the stored password on module 02 is diferent (and unknonw).

Example :

When working with modern ROYL drives that lock SA access when ATA password is present most of the times it will still be possible to access RAM and edit it :

Even if you can't read the password for example because it have characters that you can't type you should still be able to edit the password in RAM, use the option to save the new password to RAM and then use something like Victoria for windows to unlock the drive and disable the password using the NEW password set to RAM.

What are you trying to do ????

This thread is about ATA passwords .... Whatever you are trying to do doesn't have anything to do with standard ATA password, correct ?

Why did you dump the eeprom ? Did you lost smartware encryption password or something like that ? Again this thread is about ATA password and NOT about cracking encryption.

Check here instead ! - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35048

Can anybody suggest some cheap WD drive that stores USER password in "plain text" that is easy to pull with free software without any professional-ish hardware ?
I just have board that locked hd204ui samsung drive and toshiba DT01ATA300 drives with user passwords. Passwords that I don't know.
People said that there is no easy way to unlock toshiba one even with full erase and data loss. But maybe there is another way.
I want to let board "protect" another drive .... this time drive that is easy to get password from..... to get password for other drives.

1 - Use ANY IDE or SATA WD drive that doesn't have any sort of self-encryption. Just don't a drive with USB only PCB. Make sure you have a NATIVE WD drive and not for example a HGST re-branded as WD. If you go for older models you will have full access to SA even with locked drive and you will not need to read password from RAM. Don't use drives locked to DVR devices as well as it might make things harder. Read here :

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=2353

2 - Get something like WDMarvel DEMO for free and you should be able to edit config in RAM and SA and see the passwords. For very old WDC MCU based drives you can use MHDD scripts, etc ...

3 - As far as i know all WD drives will store the ATA password in plain text unless of course the device setting the password do store something like password in hex code that can't be read in ASCI. You can still send that password as file using something like Victoria :

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=117&t=1072

4 - Both Samsung and Toshiba are VERY EASY to unlock without data loss. Toshiba in general can be unlocked either by a VSC that re-creates the security module, by a VSC that allows for password of a locked drive to be changed or even by writting a new "S" module by PBA. In your case your "Toshiba" is in fact one HGST re-branded to Toshiba and can be unlocked without data loss by changing NVram and replacing security module with one of unlocked drive.

I do have a service to unlock those drives here - https://www.ebay.com/itm/ATA-Password-U ... 2674077475

- Or you can send the drive to a reputable data recovery firm .... As long as you are willing to pay you will end up with unlocked drive...

5 - Your idea is good. Just let the board protect one WD and read the password out of it. Read my posted guide and you will know how to do it for free. Use the same password to unlock the other drives.

Regards and good luck.
