My 1st HD fixing experience -not by intent

January 17th, 2008, 23:30

1st off -this is a great site, best i have found on HD's .I have learned alot in the past week reading an reading here,
but not understanding alot, lol .you guys here are good thou.

Ok,the HD that caused me the problem is a Samsung 200g -SP2014N drive, its loaded with w2k an can
boot alone ,but i have it as a 2nd drive an usually just save stuff in it.its normally on the slave primary channel.
I was going to try an recover some programs an data from an older WD drive that i would connect later to my
comp system.I had my new Seagate drive on an this Samsung-slave running.I was running HD inspector to monitor my drive temperatures-usually very low at 27ish with 2 fans cooling them seperately.I started to install Acronis Disk Director an the install went so far then something went bad.
My Samsung started making this bad squeaking sound an the install stopped but drive kept making that noise.I knew something was wrong so i did a fast system reset with the front comp case reset button, but the sound from the Samsung continued,i then did a fast power off on my comp. Now the fun started.
I returned power to my comp an the bios hung for awhile trying to check the HD's,it finally went on but only saw my Seagate HD,not my Samsung one.I tried that again an still the same thing.I knew i was in trouble.
I then unplugged an removed it from my system an booted up an went to Samsung's site-checked waranty-1yr
an drive was like 18months old :( I then went to tools etc an dl what they had for my drive-Hutil210_FDD.zip
and Samsung Shdiag.zip ,read some notes on it an then turned comp off.
I unplugged my Seagate-took if off line an set Samsung to primary master drive to run those tools -but main problem -comp would still not see the hd an the dos Samsung programs wouldn't search for hd when i started .
Oh,my system has an open case always -so i can plug in other circuit boards, etc that i have made for other
things into the good regulated power suppy-which is a good 550w one.
Ok,looks like my drive is dead an I'm p..sed off alot.I tried plugging in power only with drive at all different angles, etc.Shacked it with power off, power on then listened to it.It would start up an spin then click then
power itself down-stop spinning.Hmm,i thought they all needed to stay spinning .i plugged in a really old 2g
drive an listened to it,it stayed spinning, not like the Samsung. So i thought something may be stuck in there,
i dropped it onto floor a few times -small shock maybe would help.Nope -it would still spin up then small click an spin down.
I tied the jumper setting in the never used -4th group of pins-drive would spin up an stay spinning, hmm.
Must be some service setting-.Connected to ida cable but would not recognize drive.Shook it a bit out of frustration. But nothing worked.
I knew i should never open up drive-but it was dead to me so why not-i am really good fixing most stuff, lol.
I washed down a table an didn't see alot of dust in sunlight shinning thru to where is was so opened up drive.
It looked perfect, didn't see anything wrong.Moved heads across platters a few times-(i know now i should spin
them doing this)-but didn't know then.Saw the magnetic resting stop an saw the far stop so heads would not come off of platters.I then put cover on-not screwed on an took drive to my comp an removed cover an applied power to the Samsung. It spun up,then moved heads to outer edge of platters -real fast then back an stopped spinning, click i heard was that moving of heads.Took drive back to clean table an checked the far stop an rest stop,it all looked fine an nothing could really change on that anyways. So I'm lost,i decided to play with it.
I returned it to my comp an held the head-(BY HOLDING end coil mechanism) in the middle of the platters an applied power-it made same noise as when it died, trying to move to outer edge but my holding it wouldn't allow it to do that.this must have been like about 10 sec time.i then unplugged it.I powered it up again an it stayed
spinning this time.I then installed the ida cable to it an watched at power up.It spun up an head moved to outer edge an stayed spinning, comp was starting to boot from it.wow.
I felt air movement around drive, that was neat,(probably blew off dust or was stopping dust now from landing on it now).i put lid on while spinning, wasn't supper careful an heard a small scrap, ouch but got lid onto drive.Powered down an then moved back to table an screwed lid down.Returned to comp an powered up drive with ida cable on ,etc,IT worked, drive was working again.W2k started.I then set it to slave, attached my Seagate drive an started system up again.
I looked at HD Inspecter to see SMART setting, wow Reallocated sector count was almost at limit, did a HD Tune test an saw 7 bad sectors-block areas.
Copied some files off of drive for safely.Wrote a bit to Samsung, all seems to be fine.Played several hrs on net then decided maybe my spinrite or that HDD Regenerator program could fix those bad sectors-hmm spinrite takes forever so i tried Regenerator,Not sure what it does-i would trust spinrite more but seems all my bad sectors are fixed now.
Boy I'm some lucky guy on that Samsung, but what really did it do ?.Did the firmware have some backup sectors
on disk that it now uses because i caused it to not find 1st copy ?.Can the Samsung utilities properly check over drive an reset those Reallocated sectors if it finds them good.got some good questions.I do know now that NO ONE should do this on any disk that they want to restore data from, could really make your job harder here.I didn't care myself at that point.I keep running HD Tune an not seeing any bad blocks returning, done this about 5 times now.Getting ready to run Samsung's dos stuff on it but in no hurry -any advice would be welcome .

Can dos read an write to the SA on the drive ?.I'm pretty good at doing machine language stuff -know a bit an have all the old dos books on it.I think what happened was somehow the SA got messed up an drive went to a reserve one when i held heads -but just a guess.

Oh,i have taken drives apart in the past but did that only to get those magnets from them.

One good think is i found this site an have learned more about hd's .an know where to send any guestions
of fixing any .

Oh,i have a old Priam 233mb,RLL drive with controler card ,model ID230-RC ,full size .it shakes a table when it starts up,hehe an is made in USA -i'm Canadian, don't think any drives were ever made here.but it still works.
Its something to see vrs the new drives these days.

Thank you for any relpys .just wanted to share my hd adventure .People here would know how lucky i was :)
