I have a Maxtor 80GB YAR41BW0 which IC motor has shorted.

After much sourcing i have got a identical board to replace it with but do not have an identical firmware for the board.

Could i de-solder the fw chip from one onto the other? Or is there a software solution to this?

I would love to get my photoshop work back.

i have done a proper check and all that appears to be at fault is the ic, the new board does not burn out when installed. Drive spins up but is not recognised properly as the firmware is either not present or incorrect.

What do you have showing for a firmware version?

Garbled data, i actually beleive the firmware on the drives firmware was wiped. The PCB's are identical down to everything else though.

Please provide a firmware version that you have.
We might be able to tell you what is a problem with your drive.

Does the original PCB have a ROM?

If it does not then, any matching PCB should work.

If it does, then you need to transfer the ROM over.

If you don't know, then post a pic of thr PCB.

These drives usually have 8 pin ROMs, but I don't think the ROMs contain adaptive info. The important factors for a match are the white sticker near the power connector, and the CPU.

For example, yesterday I was able to use a D6FYA board from a 60 GB Maxtor to replace a D8FYA PCB by just changing the ROM. The "upgraded" PCB was able to perfectly image two drives from a RAID.

where is the rom chip located?

I'm lucky to be doing techical computing at university so i have most things availible for me if i need to try a rom swap.

Or would it be possible to flash the rom via a jtag type device?

The ROM is 25P10V - maybe Q400 on your PCB.

On this pcb rom is masked in main chip so no need for change,it should be q401 but its missing.Just put on your replacement pcb and it should work if preamp isnt burned!

Yep, your drive has no external ROM.

The replacement PCB should work OK, assuming HDA is OK.
