Hi everyone,

My WD600BB went dead after a power spike from my bad power supply. Now when power up, no noise, no spin, and it took a long time to pass BIOS detection. Surprisingly, the BIOS think it is WD1200BB, with 8G capacity from setup parameter. When I swap the PCB with other WD hard drive for a seconds, I can tell the motor is spinning up. Therefore, I assume the motor is still working but need a PCB. I'm looking for a way to get the data out and I'm not good at soldering. Is it possible if a PCB with same version number will work on my hard drive ? I found couple PCB from eBay by searching for 00CAA1, but they are either not matching the PCB or Controller IC#. Which is most important ?
Can someone please give me some suggestion ?

Thanks in advance,
Tommy

Here is the hard disk information
Model: WD600BB - 00CAA1
Date: 04 Jan 2003
DCM: HSEHNT2CH

PCB: 2060-001092-007
Barcode: 2061-001092-301D

Controller IC: WD80C24
MotorIC: L6278 1.2:

Match the Barcode (at least the first 10 digits or more) and find someone who can solder SMD.

Match PCB2060-001092-007 and Model number (WD600BB-xxCAA1)

Should work right away, if not swap "ST" chip @ U2.

If that don't work then u have other issues, and should seek professional advice.

Thank you for the responses. I'm at Ann Arbor, Michigan.

According to the some hard disk repair web site (deepspar.com), my hd has the following configuration. (PCB, Main Chip, Model, Driver)
22060-001092-007, WD80C24, IBM-1.1, L6278 1.2
Since I can't locate an exact match so far, will the following work ?
22060-001092-007, W70C23-GP, ST2.3, L6278 1.2

Thanks again

It will NOT work....

Main chip must be the same....

There are different FW on these two cards....

There is a very slight chance it will work without a chip swap and a very good chance it will work with a U2 chip swap (assuming your power surge did not blow your pre amp inside the drive).

Your head map information is kept in the U2 chip so even if you swapped boards with the drive made right after yours it may not work.

Find someone who can swap your chip or someone with PC-3000 or Salvation Data HD Dr.
