I have a Seagate 320 GB ATA drive that came ready briefly. I could image a few hundred sectors from the beginning or the end with DE, but then the drive would go into busy mode and not come out. Here is the log message. It appears like a head is failing; otherwise, I don't have a clue. Can anyone help and point out subsequent troubleshooting steps?

EC=43 - UNC error. Head3 has problems...
Try to image around it first.

Hi,

I also had this problem but in the last 10G of the LBA space.
I could run verifying from the beginning till the bad area with full speed, but when i tried reading, the messages would come and reading was extremely slow.
Head test revealed no problems.
I mapped out the area in the zone table, and the messages stopped. I could clone the drive till the bad area.
When I changed back the zone table, the messages didn't come back, but the last 10G was still unreadable.
there wasn't any problem with the heads...

pepe

I appreciate all of your replies.

It took a long time to make a head map. I turned off heads selectively, and tried soft & hard reset, UDMA33 vs. hardware retries, etc.

I couldn't image more than a few hundred sectors before the drive went busy and errored out.

I think I'm stuck . . . .

Pepe,

Same result regardless of head or starting position!

Starling - I'm assuming you mean to deselect HEAD 3 in the head map(Task Info) and then copy? What do you do after that to reconstruct the logical structure?

Do logical scan in DE or scan the image with R-Studio/GetDataBack.
