Seagate 7200.7. This is an unusual one which I havent seen before.
Terminal comes up with:

Interface task reset
1024k x 16 buffer detected
MASKROM - 1_Disk M-20 12-07-03 15:39
F>

It fails to identify the Family - instead is shows "MASKROM"
"." returns:
F>Pgm=00 Trk=00000000(00000000).0(0).000(000) Zn=2E Err=29 ErCt=0000 Hlth=0000 CHlth=0000 Ntrdy LBA=00000000

I do not have a PCB match, so havent yet tried a PCB exchange. Could this be a firmware/flash rom issue which can be solved using the current PCB and correct firmware, or is the PCB probably damaged which would require me to find a suitable donor?

Any suggestions?

Probably the rom contents has been damaged, needs to be reprogrammed...

If the ROM is masked in the CPU like in most 7200.7 drives could it be reprogrammed ?

No, if PCB doesn't have a flash chip. You cannot reprogram maskrom through serial port, only flash chip
If flash chip is absent you need to solder flash chip and SMD capasitor on PCB to make it work
If flash chip is on the place - try to reprogram it, if you can't - chip is dead and you need to replace it with a good one

Doomer:

I am confused.

If you have a drive without a flash IC, then the code is in the CPU (masked). Correct?

If you then add a flash IC and capacitor, will the CPU give priority to the code in the external flash ROM vs. it's own (internal) masked ROM?

So that means if there is ROM curruption in the masked ROM then i can add a capacitor and a programmed rom i can overcome this problem ?

but mask-ROM hardly could be damaged
