I currently have a Western Digital drive with the following specs:
MDL: WD400AB-00CMB0
Date: 16 Aug 2001
DCM: RSBAET2AA
Made In Malaysia
The sticker on the PCB reads 0000 001092 - 100 CD7 X W 1421 049F 8 00 04 06 0 2064
The underside of the HDD housing under the PCB when removed has the following string stamped into it:
WESTERN DIGITAL
2063-001027-000
TB5 PT

The problem with the drive before it died entirely was described to me that there was a noise coming out of the drive as if a string was being plucked occasionally. It's hard to describe but it sounded as if there was a lull and then a surge of power and you would hear a 'thunk' although not very loud or often. Of course, the HDD wasn't backed up in time.
When I plug in the HDD it isn't recognized by BIOS. I have examined the PCB very closely and there doesn't seem to be any burnt components on the PCB at all. After connecting power to it on a workbench I notice that there is no vibration from the disk at all, i.e. it isn't spinning up, and leaving it connected for several minutes the hard drive doesn't really get warm (there is a slight amount of heat generated on the underside where the PCB is), the top of the hard drive remains cold or room temperature. So, I'm wondering what the problem(s) are. Is the motor dead? Could the PCB still need replacing? Should I look for a complete donor HDD or will just the PCB suffice? Platter swap, head swap or PCB swap? I appreciate all your comments.

If it's not spinning at all, I would imagine the PCB is bad.

I have a PCB for this, and I can program the ROM to suit.
