pcb replacement ?? does anywhere sell them?

August 6th, 2008, 6:30

Hola i fried the PCB on the bottom of my seagate 500gb 7200.9 whats the odds of me getting this bitch going again? I basically think if i get a working PCB it should all be fine?
i also got a 40 gig seagate 7200.6 could i just change the guts? dreaming i think any feed back is good feedback

The 40GB and 500GB will be completely incompatible, and from differnet families of Seagate. You need to get hold of a PCB from the same family, preferably the same model, but even then you would need to transfer the ROM from the failed PCB to the Donor to force compatibliity.

When you say you ;fried' your PCB, what components did you damage? What were you doing when you killed it?

well it was an external and put the wrong power source in basically. when i opened it up you can see one of the lil black squares on the pcb cracked with a burn mark on the casing. i dont know whether i should just give up on it the info aint that important i just miss it

It all depends on how important the data is. It is a fairly simple procedure if you have the right tools and the correct know-how. But if you dont have these, it is a difficult task. And also its likely that you could only get a replacment PCB through buying a new HDD, that will set you back a few £££ before even starting.

If the data is not important, then it can be a little project for you. If it is important, then get it looked at professionally.

well locating a PCB is extremely difficult you think it would be straight forward really. You know of any sites? Looking at the actual PCB it looks like a pretty standard blowout on the lil black thing , i hope your enjoying my technical lingo.

The technical longo is great! :-)

You can use google to search for suppliers who stock old hard drives and parts, ebay is another good source. I dont really know of many suppliers who will sell individual components such as PCB without sale of whole drive. Thats not to say there arent any, if you are persistent enough I'm sure you'll find someone

If you have the tools you need for soldering you can simply replace the failed component with the same component from the donor. But this depends on the component that is damaged, and we are not taking into account the fact that there may have been additional damage caused as a result of the power surge.

Best thing to do is post a pic here as pcimage suggested.

That component can simply be replaced with a donor component found on a working PCB. In fact, depending on the model of your 40GB Seagate there may even be the possibility of using a component from that HD.

Do you have any equipment for soldering? Hot air gun, tweesers?

There are limits you can do without the right tools or skills. Looks like you just hit that limit.

It is a TVS diode, very common to fail, and relatively simple to fix assuming you have the required skills. Im pretty sure if you search this forum for TVS you will find much more information.

Hi,

As far as I see this baked TVS is on the 5V line. If it wasn't strong or quick enough, the surge could easily reach the preamp inside the HDA making it impossible to recover the data with just a pcb swap.
Sorry for the bad news.
