Hard Disk Click + Magnetic Effect

Hey

I used an external kit for connecting 2 IDE drives via USB. I guess the kit must be the villain.

Anyway, the hard disk now gives a click sound, like head is failing. And when the disk is powered and I rotate/move it in my hand, magnetic effect is obvious. Has anyone gone through this exercise.

I want to recover data on one of the drives? Should a head replacement work? I've destroyed the ext kit by the way.

Any help is welcome.

It's not magnetic effect, it's simply gyro effect caused by the rotating mass of the platters.
The clicking sound is another thing and is not good.
If you want to destroy the drive beside the ext. kit with attempts in head swap, you're welcome.

If data is important, contact a pro , pay and get the drive SERIOUSLY serviced. Regards.

should I worry about gyro effect?

I'll try replacing the head on my own. I have practiced this on dead drives and am confident. Besides I have already opened the drive in my workshop.

Data importance is 50%. I've critical backups with me. So wish me luck.

I have replaced the head unit on two 40gb dummy drives and they work fine.
This question is about Seagate drives:
Should I match just the model # or other info like firmware etc should also match. Also I read on the website that no of heads should be the same in seagate serial nos. I would appreciate if anyone can list here what codes to exactly match (seagate) to buy a spare hdd and recover data from my hdd.
