Hi everyone.

I am very new to hdds but suddenly find in my hands a 30gb Maxtor hdd thats making so much noise.

I have also been around the forum and googled a little bit but most of the info I get is either in Russian or some other undecipherable characters.

So far, I know it can be a PCB problem or something inside - the heads or something. But I need to be 100% sure before I decide to do anything about it.

Any help will be appreciated.

Maxtor its a common case with tendence to head crash, on the land zone, so on first should be checked surface on clean room , and after that, if u are sure doesnt has scratch, tried on first launch, an loader to access SA and check SA structure,

Are you trying to recover data, or bring drive back into service?

most time in these drives clicking is caused by bad heads , but u need special tools and experience to diagnose .

I am just trying to bring the drive back into service. I am not interested in the data within and I am willing to open it up if thats what I have to do.

Very easy problem to take care of. Toss the drive in the trash. Any repair would cost much more than the drive is worth, and would be very unreliable. Getting the tools yourself would be even more expensive.

Ok then. I will assume that it is dead, ie no need trying to recover it, too expensive, etc.

The only thing left for me to do with it, is trashing it in a manner that will leave me satisfied. I will dismantle it piece by piece to the last bit then try to rebuild it again then maybe I'll get some satisfaction from it all.

Where can I get some technical manuals or procedures on how to rip it apart.

Are you pissing us off? Just get some screwdrivers and tools. Don't expect it will work again.

Hey guys, am sorry! I just wanted some help which I thought I could get around here. Since it wasn't forthcoming, i decided to exlore further, afterall I couldn't loose much .

Now, since none of you was willing to help me , I took the cover off the drive and connected it to the power and guess what? The clicking noise is made by the head hitting a (clear) plastic thats attached to the case.

I don't know what that means, but if someone could enlighten me, I would be forever grateful, for though I may never use the drive again, I will have learnt something worthwhile.

You ARE learning. I don't think you will find a document that tells you what screws to remove, but if you look, you'll find them. If you're really interested, there is plenty of info here. If you search for 'clicks' on here, you'll find likely more info that you'll want. The info is there, but it's best not to expect someone to hold your hand.
