Looks more like a software protection dongle than a USB flash to me.

Once we had a wireless mouse/keyboard dongle sent in to us for recovery!

Yeah, many industrial hardware / software use this kind of dongles as a extra protection against piracy.

Would one be able to clone that, perhaps edit the serial number and make it work ? (i do believe those dongles authenticate with the software server.)

not as easy to clone dongles as you think. some store part of the code of the app on the dongle, and you need it to run various enhancements, or the software itself. some are a decryption key to the exe after the stub has run, and some are pathetic excuses for protection... but if you like a good timewaster, then by all means play around with it

BTW depending on your country laws, it may be illegal to actually clone it.

yeh, agreeing with others, he's trying to work a fast one on you there.

As per HaQue, dongles will have a combination key hard coded to protect against such folks.

Maybe ask the client if he has heard the word "complicit" used before, with relation to this sort of clone?

Lol, I actually performed a successful data recovery on one of these.

My client had broken the USB connector off the dongle, somebody glued it back on, after a few re-gluing cycles they couldn't keep the connector on.
I ordered an identical dirt cheap dongle for another product off ebay, swapped the prom and saved the day. Plus it looked 100% stock.. lol

I had an identical case a few months back too. What I did is look through all my cheap thumb drives and found one with the exact same shape/size PCB, soldered a new USB end on it, and put it into the new plastic case from the thumb drive. Customer felt like they were getting back a brand new dongle, it was even blue instead of the original red color.
