Though I had not had a chance to read the Ace thread until now, it confirms what I have been scratching my head about as far as M.2 compatibility goes. NVMe M.2 SSD do not seem compatible with SATA M.2 SSD.

FWIW, I found a pinout for an M.2 PCIe connector on page 22 of the following datasheet:
