OCZ VERTEX 2 - 180gb - not recognised in bios

January 23rd, 2018, 6:51

Hello!
I have a problem with this drive.

Symptoms:
1.When i power on the SSD, the GREEN light stays permanently on and the RED light blinks one time.
2. It doesn't get recognised in boot.
3. When i enter it in manufacurer mode (J3 short), it gets recognised as Sandforc e USB device
4. Diskpart cant see it as a drive.
5. When attached to my laptop sata port, system stucks before boot (there's no POS), it gives just a blank screen.

Steps followed till now (with a digital multimeter):
1. I have checked all the MLC CAP and RESISTORS
2. I have changed C7, C11 & C14 MLC CAP, because i thought they were faulty
3. measured R9, R13 without removing them from the circuit are 101ohm
4. measured R7, r10 are 1Mohm
5. cant measure C10, C16 probably they are over 200uF
6. Resistors around the MT29F64G08CBAAA chips are 3Kohm

Could someone help me understand why this drive doesnt work.
If it is the controller, would it work if i replace it? (i have no experience with Controllers nor JTAG)
If it is simply a FW problem, how can i update it by JTAG/RS232, what are the steps i have to follow?
Thank you.

Likely electronics are fine. The issue is likely with the Sandforce controller. Common problem.

Yes it looks like problem with the SF controller.

Yes, we can do it.

Thanks Petre.

On the U2, pin 3 and 7-8 which are connected by the C14 cap, there seems to be a resistance of +-56ohms.
On the U3, it is the same but on cap C13 there isn't a low resistance.
Could this be that the chip is shorted?
I have changed the C14 cap already, it's ok.
The voltages i have been able to read (my multimeter which gives only full voltage values no 0.00) are 2v DC on all the board and and 4v only on the 5V power entry.
