SSD short diagnostics

November 28th, 2023, 0:10

This SSD based on Realtek mcu is not getting detected and in pc3k it shows short .
I have searched forum and over internet but schematic or component identification of voltages is not found. I have done basic testing of capacitors but none is shorted.
How can I do further testing ,can someone pls. help.
Thanks

What is the resistance between SATA +5V and ground?

What is the resistance between each of the 2R2 inductors and ground?

Good Morning fzabkar .Thanks for replying quickly :good:
All three 2R2 are open ( 0 resistance ) and +5V to GND is also open.

MISU, What do you mean PC3000 shows it as short? How short - put some number of the current drawn. Is it constant / instant etc.

Hi Lardman & fzabkar
Firstly sorry - all 3 2R2 , capacitors , fuse etc and +5V to GND are not open (I accidentally wrote opposite). There is no short
In pc3k I powered SSD but all registers were glowing , typically it happens when pcb is faulty. So in order to not to harm ssd I have powered off immediately.
3 voltage regulators must be checked for input /output voltage but I don't know voltages .

Just measure the voltages between each inductor and ground.

Not always and it isn't an indication of a short. Best to connect it up to a lab supply and get the actual current drawn and any pattern that is being produced at power on / initialisation.

Yes Lardman & fzabkar
Finally I sent SSD to an associate having PC3K Portable and Electronics expertise.
He has thoroughly checked SSD and has concluded that all electronic components are working fine & Issue is in MCU which is drawing very high current and is getting super hot. This MCU is not supported by portable and he will not be able to recover data from this case.
Thank you both of you. Its been a great learning experience and I am hopeful my next case will be bit easy.

Unfortunately many end up like this. If the controller is getting hot rather than just warm from use that could be shorted - it's always worth swapping it with a donor if the device is otherwise unrecoverable, I'm not familiar with this particular drive so it may be serialised like the sandisks.

Yes I am not aware of encryption keys ,replacing MCU is not possible is what he has concluded.
