Can I fake a SSD?

Hello!

I just built a new machine, and my old 7200RPM HDD's aren't cutting the bill. I'm a Linux user, and as some of you may know, most Linux distributions can run just fine from a USB flash drive.

Would my flashdrive be faster than my HDD? I really can't constitute spending so much on a SSD. I do not want massive storrage 4 GB is enough for the OS, and anything else could go on the HDDs.

1. SATA to flash memory adapter.
2. IDE to flash memory adapter.
3. USB flash stick.

Does SATA to CF have approximate speeds to SSDs?
