I don't see any relevant error messages in your posting, nor any history etc. so please give the readers here a possibility to help you, by supplying more information. Here are some examples of information which would be helpful (but I don't guarantee that this is a complete list - more questions are possible): - What is your objective? (Data recovery? I don't *think* so... Or just to be able to use this USB drive when formatted to NTFS?) - What OS are you currently using - Linux? BSD? Something else? - Do you have access to a machine running Windows? (There are some helpful utilities which only run on Windows.) - Do you know that this USB drive was fully working before you tried to format it as NTFS? If so, then *how* do you know e.g. what testing did you do? - How long have you been using that USB drive before now? - What filesystem format was being used before you tried to format it as NTFS? (FAT32? ext3? Something else?) - What made you decide to try formatting this drive - did you see any errors *before* you tried to format the drive as NTFS? - Do you have the host messages showing the eror messages which were logged when you *first* tried to format the drive as NTFS and saw a problem? - You mentioned that you tried to run "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb1 bs=512 count=1". What exact error message was logged in the host messages when you did that? FYI, it is *possible* that the reason for this behaviour, is that the USB drive is not really the 16GB capacity which is claimed. Do you have proof that the drive really has 16GB of Flash? (For example - have you successfully copied 16GB of data to it (using any filesystem type) and then read/verified that 16GB of data was successfully stored on the drive? Or used some other testing method?) |

If you have tried to format then data is not important, and cost for high capacity flash is not so high. If in doubt, replace it. |
