that is new to me. I would try and and unsolder the Microsd and see if it will read in a microsd reader. you may get lucky, but that is definitely odd

in addition, if you do unsolder it, can you take a pick of how ti was soldered to the board, i am curious. Micro Sd has its own built in controller, plus there is the controller chip on the circuit board... soooo odd

Hot air + looots of IR preheat from bottom is the way to go. Just check if it is superglued or epoxied there first
I guess it was soldered as any other SMD component - other guess is - it was bridged with wires, then bent down and glued - the third one is with push-up pins that got soldered to both sides.

Well - some SMD components are glued there by heat resistant compound - that is to prevent them from falling off during pre-heat and re-flow. That can be pain if you find it out when you are applying more heat to the chip, thinking it is an issue of too low-temperature to melt the solder and instead you are just burning the chip.

First time I see this too.

Can you update us on details when you de-solder it?

Could you take a pic of the pcb with the microSD unsoldered?

Just curious.

Thanks!

Nope, micro SD is dead.

Could possibly use wire adaptor with Soft Center reader to connect to those contact points on the back (once the pinouts are found) but clients budget didn't stretch to that.

Sean's case can you recovery if MSD is fine. do you double check it? make sure it's dead?
