Has anyone seen anything like this around? I am not sure of the reason for the extra contacts soldered to it. It was quite hard to pull apart, glued or melted together. can anyone tell me what the actual name of this type of memory is? I see everyone says Monolith, but I don't see that term on the manufacturers sites. What do the manufacturers call these things so I can try to find documentation...

This was in a Patriot Lifestyle Element USB3 Drive.

cheers

HaQue

Those extra 5 contacts carry the USB 3.0 signals.

Ok, ha.. I've never taken the time to look at USB3 connectors or ports and assumed they were same as 2.0, just faster! Seems I am focussing too much on whats inside and not enough on the other general details. I'll slink off into the shadows now and hide ;-(

Thanks for the info!

It is classical monolith UFD. No documentation for it - I'm sure. Do you need data from it?

For data recovery from this type monolith need use Logic analyzer for recognized pin outs. After that use PC 3000 or Sort-center tools for data recovery.
we use logic analyzer - "HP" and "Lecroy"

for data recovery use soft and tools -

I don't need Data as it is Brand new. I am buying all drives I can find in my city to map out each one on what I need to do to recover data. I have been doing alot of TSOPs and was opting for a change of pace, so I opened on of my monoliths. I did not initially choose the USB3 one, it just so happened that way, and I guess the first one Ive looked at.

I have a logic Analyser, I don't know if I should say it is "only" an Openbench Logic analyser as I don't know yet if this is suffice for the task or not.

I had a small session to try and get some logic output, but spent a bit of time updating firmware on the device, and getting the software working on the PC.

From what I see, it looks like it will do the job, though the sample time is short. Im not really versed with LA's so it will take some time.

I am guessing what I need to do is get familiar with output of TSOP chips logic output of each pin and then try and find points on the Monolith that look the same so I can label that point accordingly.

I have a few hundred devices and I think only a few dozen are Monolith.

BTW the only DR tool I own is Flash doctor. I do have a Soft Center NAND Reader, but no licence as yet as I am a small fish and spent all my dough on the SD tool.

For your SD tool all I can say is good luck on this one. You should try and sell this one and buy the soft center for you. I do not know many people who can use that tool and recover flash drives with it. You can with soft center. Guess all I can say is good luck with the Flash Doctor from SD on this one.

Thanks Anne, but I couldn't sell this tool to anyone with a clear conscience.. I cannot afford the SC license right now, so I have to make do.

I hope the new version of FD will be better, if there is an English version. Why don't SD mention ECC, voltage mods required for some chips or XOR at all? Seems working with any recent chips you need to take these into account.

I was working on an old Flash Drive,256MB, I thought if the chip was simple enough and the device had very little chance of mix complexity, many planes to work with etc, then I can concentrate on the basics and have success.

NAND Chip: Samsung K9F2G08U0M
Controller Trek TD2SMG9-03LB
sticker on NAND: A31SD10866
ChipID: ECDA801550000000

Well the FD6.0 software read it and I could get various quality recovery. some .jpg files had stripes through them so I need to figure out how the do the settings. I think this controller is a pain.

Other tools get perfect recovery on this one.

Buying SC tool now is waste of money, unfortunately. Look here: http://flash-extractor.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6179
