good evening ;

so , i have a flash disk that can be plugged to an IDE port , and it has it's own power feed jack to be connected to the computer's power supply , the disk should has an OS to boot at , to use a 3D printer , the disk doesn't boot anymore , althought BIOS does detect the flash.

trying to get an image for this flash , returned two errors , two sectors couldn't be retrieved at all , what ever i tried to ..

unfortunatly , the two sectors located into the main excutable , there for , the OS can't boot any more from it .

getting a replacement is not an option , as the manufacturer asked for a 550$ !!!!!

can you find someone else with the same device? look on forums based around your device/scene.
IMHO getting a good .exe or OS(?) would be better than data recovery.

Otherwise send your flash to a data recovery lab. I have seen prices around $220, though this could vary.

The manufacturer asking that much is a bit crappy in my opinion. Surely they could give you a disk image or something?

If you give specifics of the printer and disk etc maybe you could get some help on that.

What did you use to get the image? you might be able to use different options to get a better image, but maybe might not be a good idea to play around too much at this stage.

What is it a compact flash? SSD?

Are you able to send your disk in to get them to reimage it? I Think it is ludicrous to ask a customer of this type of equipment that much for what is in essence a firmware upgrade, or an OS re-install. Especially as I am guessing it is REALLY expensive.

If there is no warranty, then you may consider CAREFULLY opening the Module and taking some high res photos so we can see what is inside. I am guessing it is a standard NAND and some kind of controller, and alot of embedded devices dont use a great deal of security/complexity so you may be able to use standard Flash drive recovery options by taking it to a DR Lab.

You can get plenty of DiskOnModule Cards for around $50 - Google search for "DiskOnModule price" and you just need to get the software. And I would be harassing the vendor for this.

By the way, the reason I am not pushing the DR option is because I would not totally trust an Operating system or executable files that were recovered.. MUCH better to re-install or image.

no their support wouldn't send me the OS or let me send them the flash to re-install the OS .

they just sell it as it is ..

couldn't locate some one that has the same printer ..
booting from the damaged disk givving that ellcfw.exe was not found , so if i tried to boot from a usb stick that has the image file produced in ddrescue .

no OS available at their support site , only some manuals and upgrades for the printer software , not the OS drive ..

i would take the unit apart to get the photos u asked for , but what are the chances of recovering it ?

Well if you don't have warranty, then nothing to lose to take it apart CAREFULLY. Chances are same as any other flash drive I suppose, but that is just going on available details.
But as I said an exe has to be exactly recovered. That's why other options are better. T see what I mean, open up notepad in a hex editor, change one byte, say a jump of "71" to something else, say 66 and see it will probably now not run.

I would be willing to try recovery, or help you find the software.

Do these drives support the ATA Read Long command? If so, then you may be able to read the raw data plus ECC bytes. If you do this several times, and compare the various attempts, then perhaps you will see which bit(s) are at fault. BTW, that's what SpinRite claims to do.

Could you upload the 32MB image file (off-site, if necessary)?

If you could upload some photos of the internals, perhaps there may be a way to play with the power supply voltage, assuming it is reduced to +3.3V. FWIW, I have sometimes managed to recover flaky EEPROMs using this technique.
