Micron C400 256GB SSD problem - size=0MB

October 29th, 2013, 11:58

Hello all, I have a problem with the Micron C400 SSD as in the subject. MHDD recognizes the drive but reports LBA:0 and Size=0MB, followed by "This device does not support LBA mode. MHDD will not work with this device".

HDAT2 shows more information. It reports that HPA is active and indicates DCO: size error + frozen. In the HPA menu it shows the correct "native size" as 256GB but "current user" is reported as 0KB and "current hidden" as 256GB - all of it HPA. Unfortunately, an attempt to zero the HPA and set "current user" to max native size returns the "command aborted" error message. Similarly, "Auto Remove HPA area" throws an error message (using both 48-bit and 28-bit set max command).
The "overview of hidden areas" screen reports user 0KB, HPA 256GB and DCO max LBA:0, followed by "size error: DCO LBA address is less than native LBA". Going to the DCO menu results in the whole feature set returning an error message due to the drive being in frozen state. I haven't been able to start the HDAT2 without the drive not being in the frozen state.

The drive was recognized when booted from a Micron boot disk and I was able to update it to the latest firmware available. Unfortunately, it didn't change anything about the above problem.

Any ideas as to what else I can try in terms of software-based solutions? Or is PC3K the only route?

Thanks for suggesting Michal. Was just wondering if there's anything else I can do without resorting to specialized equipment/tools.

@HaQue - I don't personally have access to PC3K or anything similar. But it looks like that's the only way to go...

does it have a serial port? maybe have a look through the forum at how others have connected to the serial port of SSD and other hard drives. You only need a TTL-serial to usb converter ($3 on ebay) and putty, minicom, hyperterminal etc

Had a similar case last week! :)
Recovered data using PC3K Flash Marvell VanGogh utility. So I advise you to ask for help somebody with skills and equipment.

The SSD is already with Michal. Thanks once again for suggesting him. It would be a shame not to leave the disk in his very capable hands, all the more so as we're both from the same city :)

One thing I forgot to mention right from the beginning - I don't care about the data on the disk, just want to have it repaired, if possible. Will report back.

I have nothing but the highest praise for Michal's professionalism and his helpful, friendly attitude. My SSD was repaired by him personally and was ready for pickup in a couple of working days. It's hard not to recommend him to anyone who needs professional help. Thanks again, everyone, and special thanks to Michal :D
