I have to admit that I don't truly understand how a ceramic heated based technology is considered IR. I have a Jovy unit and I am in the same ceramic boat. Don't get why it is/was advertised as IR.

Its the housing that is ceramic, and there are different types of IR
If you have the jovy 8500 than that is better than the ACHI as it uses elstein heaters stock

I have been using PDR infra red rework station on all my jobs
Basically preheat board as said earlier to around 180 degrees
Then using wand from above apply heat for roughly 30 seconds
Chips just come off with no issues
Excellent unit can't fault it
Don't come cheap at around $6000 but we'll worth it

Yeah, PDR is true IR. Works nicely.

For TSOP48 use a ~11mm blade tip, you can pull the chip safely in ~10seconds with no effort.
