logic analyser for monolith pinout discovery (again)

I am getting rid of my LA and want a new one. Unfortunately I cant afford a Lecroy or Rigol real logic Analyser, with a budget of about AU$500.. My 2 choices look like :

a) Saleae Logic Pro16 about $500 https://www.saleae.com
b) Intronix LogicPort about $400 http://www.pctestinstruments.com/index.htm

specifications for both these are confusing the hell out ome.

if any of you have bought a LA for this purpose, I'd love to have confirmation the specs will be fine for NAND.

If the fastest timing period is about 5ns, and using 15 channels on the Saleae brings speed to 100MHz, and it can do 500M samples/sec .. this should be ok?

looks like the only thing people buy these for is SPI and I2c and even 24MHz LA's are ok, I can find nowhere that shows someone using a LA for NAND, and what settings they require.

I am leaning toward buying the Saleae.

As result of your posting, I looked the Logic16 up on their site. They claim to be able to help/guide the client with about any request. Wonder if you attempted that and how it went!

I ordered a Logic pro16 so as soon as it comes I will put it through its paces.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like there is a NAND Protocol decoder yet, or Sigrok support so that's the next hurdle!

Wish the budget was bigger!

Is your concerns because of the 34 channels or the speed?

I still am having trouble figuring out exactly what specs I require, and if these can perform. I don't care how basic they are, or how many features there are, it is purely for NAND pinout research.

I think I saw somewhere that with the Intronix, each channel can sample at the advertised rate, but I really cant confirm it. The usual PC based LA's will sample less with more channels capturing. looks like with 15 channels enabled, the Saleae will still do 100MHz.

Michal, would you have an example of a better choice for a LA for this purpose, or something I can compare to? Or number of channels with each channel needing xxMHZ or xxMS/Sec. I could budget to around AU$1,000 only :( at this time

I am worried that there is actually nothing in a reasonable budget that can help me. That's why I thought I would get the Saleae, as it would hold resale value if it can't cut it... and I would be able to set it up, get familiar with how LA's work and what limitations it has and if nothing else will know what better specs I need in my next purchase.

It is either this or sit back and do nothing at all ;)

AU does not seem to have a very good surplus equipment scene, so picking up a really good ex-lab LA for cheap like the guys in the states might do seems out of the question unfortunately.

I have a massive amount of Monoliths that I want to start getting pinouts figured out on.

More channels - better, more Mhz - better. Try find with 32 channels and 200Mhz at least, better to have 400/500Mhz. 100Mhz will be to small for some cases I think.

I have few LA. One of them is LogicDAQ 2.2.

HaQue, how could I know it has "NAND Protocol decoder" ? Is it possible to know from the spec in the above link ?

Note
Signal require higher sample channels, not support on LAP-C 16 ch series.

I don't think there is any way around it - must buy a Good, $$$ LA !

To be honest its ok, but is about the bare minimum i would recommend..

the stock signal wires are too short and too stiff.. a bit of a compromise on quality. I have changed them out for Silicone coated multi strand, & Kynar coated 30AWG signal wire..
