There are a few places that claim that they can handle SandForce controllers, but we have yet to see any real evidence of that. Seeing that they charge you a fee for the attempt, it seems that they don't have a lot of faith in their ability to do so. If you do outsource to one of these places, please follow up to this thread and let us know the results.

an upfront fee of a few hundred dollars is IMHO quite steep to look at the controller number and see it is encrypted, look over it with a magnifying glass, and plug it in and say "yep, its dead"

Encryption doesnt put an end to the data recovery! Intel 320, intel 710, samsung 840, some crucial and micron drives, ocz vertex 450 and some other drives based on Barefoot 3 controller, uses hardware encryption (AES). But the data in many cases could be recovered.
There is no public solution for the Sandforce based drives, but some DR companies, that included into the Sandforce trusted program, got one. So they able to do some % of cases. As far as Seagate have bought the Sandforce, i advice to look for the Seagate data recovery centers. Probably they could a little bit more than others. But the price could be realy high...

And sometimes the error is not controller related. Have saved data from 3 pcs of 2VTX1X0G.
A thermal camera is a very good assistance to find the defective components.
