This thread is very interesting.

I have my own Samsung 860 EVO solid state disk (500 GB) that worked fine for 2 years in my Windows 8.1 desktop computer.

Suddenly something happend in the night when I was sleeping (the PC was in the SLEEP mode as well :) )

After this unexpected event the drive is not dropping the BUSY flag, the only ATA command that is executinging is IDENTIFY DEVICE.

All other commands result in the constant BUSY state, but if I disconnect and reconnect the SATA cable the BUSY flag is dropped and the drive reports to be ready again (with both DRDY and DRSC flags being raised, and BUSY flag dropped).

I suspect it may be caused by the damage of the voltage regulator chip on the SSD disk's PCB.

Any ideas?

How to diagnose this problem?

The gurus advice will be very much appreciated!

AKE is the chip model, 3/4 is definitely the production year (2013/2014) , and the rest 2 characters are most likely a week code.

I have 2 of these AKE chips left from destructive research experiments, if you need them.


I really appreciate it! thanks but found a identical ssd and looks like controller is dead. measured low resistance compared to the known good from voltages coming straight from the burnt chip so I assume thats a dead end.

Lately I prefer to put these Samsungs on "bypass" instead of repairing on board power circuit.
Faster to just to supply power from a working identical drive :wink:

The EVO840 does not have any EEPROM in the controller, so you could just take off the NAND chips (with hot air) reball them and put them on an donor PCB and you should be able to read them out on the donor.

What would be the likely fault and diagnosis for my Evo 840 500 GB. My notebook was left on, and the fan inlet was covered up. Everything got real hot. SSD wont boot. Maybe fuse?

Measure the supply voltages in @sourcerer's manual.

BTW, I suspect the AKE chip is made by Silergy. Their part marking convention is AKExyz, where x = year, y = week, z = lot number.

The e-fuse is probably a Silergy chip, too. The part marking is probably JSxyz.
