Have you tried to read it out of the circuit ?

Are you sure the socket or the clip are the right way ? My old eeprom burner informs a FF FF FF FF id when the chip is upside down.

The adapter is inserted the wrong way around. The "1" needs to be at top-left, although it looks like the red lead is connected to pin 1 of the reader so double-check that the red lead of the clip is connected to the red dot on the IC.

Why have you selected now W25X16AL ?
Select W25X20AL
remove the V from check device ID
then read it

Now I have lost you
The ROM you are trying to read is from a WD.
So how did you get to Seagate ?

On your screenshot you have W25X16AL selected which is different to chip that you told us.
All you need to do is select the correct model and it should read fine.

By the way where did you get that clip device so you don't have to de-solder?

I think there is no clip in the market for that
Build your own clip

Are you talking about the flat Winbond chips? They are almost on every 2.5" drive not just Seagate.
Can't see why you can't solder some BGA balls on the sides of the chip then use your clip device.

Post subject:  Re: help! Rom recovery using tl866 programmer

If I understand the screenshot correctly, it failed to write new content to the ROM? You could try it using a known-good/new ROM, to see if it is a bad IC. I had a lot of problems with read/write errors on mine so I bought a Revelprog IS unit instead. Besides, it handles low voltage ROMs whereas the TL866 doesn't. Have yet to have a problem with the Revelprog IS.

Also, I usually have to unsolder the IC from the PCB because other components in the circuit load down the programmer too much, causing bad reads. Is the ROM off the PCB when you try to write to it? Is the USB port used by the programmer on a hub? Use one directly connected to the PC motherboard, at the back of the PC.
