Post subject:  IBM branded "Locked" 400GB SSD

Hi

We're decommissioning two IBM DS8800 at work and I have about 200 x 400GB SSD drives, that I don't know what to do with. A first this seemed like a nice problem to have, although they are SAS drives, they still have a decent size and they are enterprise grade :D
Well unfortunatly I've run into the issue that these SSD's are branded and I cannot get them to work in a normal server. I have tested several of the SSD's and it's the same with all of them.
As soon as I try and set the drive online or create a new raid set, then the disks go into a failed state.

Disk details:
sTec model: Z16IZF2E-400UCV
IBM FRU: 98Y4042

Is there any way I can get life back into these disks? FW upgrade/downgrade, special tools, special SAS controller, etc.

Br.
Peter

Have you wiped the drives clean before attempting to put the drives into a new configuration? The controller might be recognizing them as drives that belong to a different RAID.

Yes, I've tried clearing the configuration and when scanning for a foreign config, the controller responds with "No foreign configuration found"

I don't think you can call Dell's hardware "normal". I see a lot of posts from people who cannot get regular retail drives to work in Dell servers, let alone drives from other OEMs. ISTM that Dell does something to the firmware to ensure that only Dell supplied drives will work.

I've tried changing the SAS controller, they accept all disks (Dell and Non-Dell) except the IBM disks :-(
