USB dongle connector broken

March 4th, 2019, 8:44

Hi,

I have A USB dungle calles Hasp HL that the USB connector was broken
I gave it to someone to resolder and its not working

when connecting to the computer I get A Windows Hardware Fail sound
when disconnecting I do get Windows Hardware Remove sound

can I do something to fix it ?

Thanks for any imput

sounds like they didn't fix it properly or the circuit board, components or traces were damaged when it broke off.

can you provide high res photo of both sides?

generally a good idea to fix these under microscope. they look easy but can be deceptive and easy to misalign, bridge solder where it shouldn't go or not notice cracks or broken wire traces.

sometimes the device fails when it gets broken if it was plugged in at the time.

a replacement dongle might be only hope, but depends whats software, support there is etc.

thanks for replying

it broke off the USB connector only

I don't know if the guy did it under A microscope

it was plugged in wheen it happaned

if A replacement is not possible then it is game over ?
or can be someow duplicate ?

The company that sold the software or system can probably replace the dongle for you if you trade in the broken one. That's, of course, assuming the company still exists and is kind enough to do this for you.

As to the soldering repair, I'd guess that 90% of the broken USB header solder jobs I've seen done by PC shops were completely botched. You need to look for a bonafide data recovery company or another place with proper micro-soldering equipment. I can't tell you how many times I've removed big blob of solder on a USB header only to find that the contact point was ripped out and they were soldering it onto nothing but air. If you went to a place that does virus removals and the likes, this is most likely what happened.

Hi, data-medics

thenks for replying

unfortunately the company sold/made the software does not exist any more
therfore asking for a replacement is not posible

regarding the soldering
I really don't know if it is done right

but I borrowed from A friend a multimeter , and I tried to check continuity from the USB header and see if I get A beep when I touch with the other lid some components
and do get continuity
please don't ask me from what do I have continuity to what
because I was shooting in the dark, I tried them all until I got A beep just to eliminate the possibility you have mentioned

So I think that the soldering was definatelly not to the air but to something
am I mistaken ?

Maybe if you said where you are located we could point you in the right direction?

thanks pcimage for replying

is it really necessary to send it to A professional and can not be done by myself ?

maybe, maybe not.

If you look over your posts, and pretend that this as only what you know about the job... can you explain how someone could tell?

there is basically no facts about the actual physical condition of the dongle. maybe a couple of descriptions of what happened, and some vague description of what was done but thats all.

If you are unable to provide pictures when asked, Unable to understand a continuity test... and where it should be conducted(pardon the pun) and unable to say what software it is... then no I dont think it is DIY.

PM the software if you dont want to say publicly.

In this kind of joke scenario one usually finds more damage was done by the 'person' who resoldered the connector than by the initial break.
The circuit board will likely have multiple layers that can be in short circuited state and through board connections. There's plenty of opportunity for total destruction here and that's why it should be handed over to somebody who knows what they are doing.

Hard to really see, but it kind of looks like some of the pads may be damaged/not connected and that is why you are not getting a solid connection from the repair.

thanks Cleanroom

can you please mark what pad is the problem ?

Perhaps @Cleanroom is referring to this one...

thanks LarrySabo

when you say "Perhaps ... this one..."
do you mean the one who belongs to the USB connector
or the one who belongs to the chip ?

I would say the two center pad's look lifted...might need to be reconnected.

thanks mr_spokk

already written above
I have tested continuity to all the pads, eliminating the possibility you have mentioned
those 2 pads have continuity as shown in the picture attached below
So, they can not be lifted

I was referring to the USB lead. Never even noticed the IC lead being dodgy. I would touch them all up.

I don't like the look of this one either:

Re: USB dongle connector broken

March 6th, 2019, 4:30

thanks HaQue

but number 4 you referring to has continuity with number 1 of the chip

maybe it is dumb question
is there any risk of transffering both chips to a similar dungle (if I can find one) ?

Re: USB dongle connector broken

The symptoms described in the first post could mean a missing data line connection or a crystal oscillator fault.
Check for continuity on both sides of the usb plug as its not uncommon for the Data+ or Data- connection (circled in black) to break inside the plug in connector.
Then if required you would also need to check if the oscillator is functioning correctly.
