"LLF"-ing a SSD

August 27th, 2019, 12:42

Hello,

I get and then sell lots of used HDDs and SSDs which I first "Low Level Format" with the HDD LLF Tool (https://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Lo ... rmat-Tool/), so that if someone would try and use a "home recovery tool" like Recuva, would not be able to recover any data from the old drives.

HDD LFF Tool works great for the HDDs. But is it fine for SSDs too? Or is it overkill? If it's overkill, what else should I use/do?

Thank you.

Most SSDs will erase in less than 20 seconds with a secure erase command.

And will it be possible, after the 20 second secure erase command, to recover any data from the SSD, with a "home recovery tool" like Recuva?

If not, which program should I use to secure erase various SSDs that I get and then sell? I'd like something equivalent to what HDD LLF Tool does to HDDs.

Thank you.

Most SSD's are Encrypted...
Issuing a Secure Erase Command to a SSD will typically change the encryption key..

Even without erasing all the NAND the data will effectively be destroyed.

OK, so how do I do that, which program do I use, how do I issue a Secure Erase Command to a SSD?

Thank you.

I just want to erase them well enough so that a second-hand buyer won't be able to recover data with simple "home use" tools like Recuva.

So how should I go about it? Download the Samsung/Crucial/Kingston/whatever... proprietary SSD program and us it to Secure Erase the SSD?

Or is there an universal SSD erasing program I could use? Thanx.

good idea is to go to the vendor website and search their FAQs

better idea:

1. find a drive you want to erase for test
2. write a heap of .jpgs on there. choose small ones so when you do your test they would be easy to recover.
3. go to that SSD vendors website and search for method they recommend, or google how to erase a drive, then do it.
4. try to recover with recuva and any other tool you can grab.
5. you have your piece of mind, or you find method is flawed.
lather, rinse, repeat until you get results...
If you cant get the results you want, you now have something specific to ask on forums, and you can provide your trials and tribulations and get guidance.

if you don't test, you will never be satisfied.
