Samsung NVMe PM591 (MZ-VLW5120)

Hello.

I've Samsung NVMe drive PM591 (MZ-VLW5120 ) . It comes from Lenovo X1 Carbon (5th gen). Last time my notebook gets down to floor. After that it stop working (I suppose it's mainboard issue). However, I remove NVMe disk from it and try to use in new Lenovo Carbon. Once I power up I got error 2100: Detection error on Storage Device (M.2 ) . So it looks like NVMe gets faulty or something.

I try to read NVMe in external M.2 -> USB adaptor but it is not recognized.

Is there anything else that I can do (such safe mode things etc) to try to get it works?

You need an adapter/enclosure that has a USB-NVMe bridge, not USB-SATA.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. I have Tracer NVME 702 AL adapter. Manufacrurer says it is for m.2 NVMe. How can i check compatibility?

Can you upload detailed photos of each side of the Tracer PCB and Samsung PCB?

The adapter does have an NVMe bridge (JMS583).

I would measure the following voltages on the SSD:

Test are made on NVMe -> USB adapter


v1 (inductor) - 1.835 V
V2 - 1.084V
V3 - 1.79V
v4 (inductor) - 1.084 V
V5 - 1.249 V

vboost - 12.02V, after some seconds it start going down to 0.3 v and then gets down to 0.20v

ISTM that the supply voltages are probably OK. It may be that the SSD has a "firmware fault".

Otherwise, I would check the crystal, just in case it was shattered by the fall.

Hi. Thanks for answer. Is there any possibility to repair firmware on that NVMe? What you mean by "crystal" ?

This looks like the crystal:

The crystal is cut from quartz which can be shattered by a sharp impact. Often you can hear the shards rattling inside the metal case.

AFAIK, there is currently only one [very expensive] professional tool that can deal with NVMe SSDs at the firmware level. In any case I believe recent Samsung SSDs have not yet been reverse engineered (due to encryption).
