Post subject:  USB Key 32GB - Drive not detected at all, little LED is on

Hi guys,

I got that USB Key 32 GB. The drive is not detected at all however the little led does turn on red, steady, not flashing. I am looking for the oscillator but it must be SMD and I am not sure which one. I tried searching using the info on PCB but can't find anything relevant.

Thanks
Sam

That controller is probably using an internal oscillator.
I would check in the device manager, if it comes up in the disk drives section as the controller name with 0 capacity.
If it does, the problem is probably in the NAND.

It's odd as there's nothing on W10 Disk Management or MacOS disk Utility however the light is on. It looks like controller doesn't talk to PC ?

It would take at least an oscilloscope to check if it really talks over the usb (or a proto analyzer) and the NAND.
There's not much you can do without tools, apart from checking broken soldering...

Yeah, I'll get an oscilloscope today.

I've made some progress. I've connected 5V to controller U1, now USBkey is recognized by PC. I can't yet access data, USB is listed but not can't initialize it, doesn't report capacity. I am sharing if that can help someone.

Looks like the problem is the "write-protect" now.

i guess it is time for a chip-off. Can you handle it?
