Sandisk Ultra II 480gb - suddenly dead

January 19th, 2025, 8:08

Hi,

Recently I had this Sandisk Ultra II 480gb SSD die on me (SDSSDII-480G). Before it was working okay. No surprises. Now its undetected. The chips get warm overtime. Especially U10, it gets the hottest. Most of the posts here had Marvell 88SS9189-BLD2 as the controller, while I got an 88SS1074-BSW2, so no idea if it would be the same case. I tried finding L1,2,3,4 but no luck. Only found L8,9,10.

I'd like to know if it's possible to repair this drive. The data is not needed as this is just a fresh install of w10.

Your links require a google login and I can't be bother with that nonsense.

Drives of this age aren't worth fixing for anything other than data recovery purposes and as the fault is likely just to be degraded nand anyway unless you have reason to believe it's an electrical issue just toss it in the donor parts pile.

It occured to me that before this SSD died, I put the laptop to sleep, so I guess its another one of those issues when this one doesn't come out of sleep.
Besides, this one had like 2TBW, so it's still okay to attempt repair.

So for fun I've tried plugging it into another SATA - USB adapter I owned (first one just didn't work with this drive). W10 did detect it but diskmgmt says that its not initialized and doesn't have any partitions on it.
Any ideas what pins to short to get it to service mode?
