check out old maxtor pcbs (calypso, N40P for example), you will find something interesting. Not very common but exists. |

I have tried to follow along with the diagnostic steps but have been having some difficulty. I have access to DSO, function generator, multimeter and basic LCR (but no ESR meter). All the capacitors I have inspected do appear to be working - doing a frequency sweep on the DSO between 1Hz and 10kHz at 0.1V I do see the signal amplitude decrease to zero with frequency as expected due to reactance. I have tried to check resistance between GND and the components suggested by fzabkar. I wasn't able to use the screw hole as they do not appear to be on common ground (?), but using one of the COM lines on the SATA power connector (Pin 4) I had the following readings: L4 - 1.76kOhm L3 - 45 Ohm C68 - Increases and keeps increasing >40kOhms (capacitor charging?) L2 37 kOhms L7 Increases up to 40kOhms L5 - increases up to 50kOhms L2 14 kOhm L7 39 kOhm One thing I noticed which may or may not be relevant is that SATA power connector pins 4, 5, 6, 10, and 12 as well as data connector pins 1, 4, and 7 have 0 resistance between each other, but pin 11 (which as I understand should also be COM) reads 6.3 kOhms between the other COM pins. |

Measurements look fine, check the voltages (carefully) next. Are you getting anything from it on the pc at all? |
