Maxwell 4GB Flash Physical Damage

September 9th, 2021, 20:55

Trying to recover data from a Maxwell 4GB thumbdrive that had the USB port broken off. I believe it's this model which is rather bizarrely still for sale on Amazon:
https://www.amazon.com/Maxell-Flash-Dri ... B002USOE34

Usually just soldering some trace wires to reattach the connector does the trick, but I've done that and the drive gets power but is listed in USBDeview as USB DISK 30X USB Device with no storage capacity detected. Contemplating ordering another drive and doing a chip off swap but I see mention of password protection in the product listing so not sure whether it would work? Or maybe there's some other component that could be replaced to fix it? I also tried touching up all the solder points on the memory chip to no effect.

What does Chip Genius report?

Can you measure 3.3V across the bypass capacitors around the NAND?

Flip the board over so we can check the controller.

It's difficult to see through the glare on the photo, can you clean up the flux a bit and show us a closer view of your connections. Was that the original usb plug? Anything getting hot? Current draw?

If this is a customers data, I think you may want to reconsider trying to swap the tsop in house.

Bypass caps do show 3.3v. This is the original USB port.

Measure Vcc and Vccq at the NAND.

Measure the voltage across R1 (1R5, 1.5 ohm resistor). The voltage drop should tell you the current draw.
