I have a five year old HP laptop that is so laggy that I can't get it to work properly. I tried reinstalling the system and couldn't fix the problem, I took it apart and saw that it only has a HDD. so I was wondering if I buy an SSD to replace this HDD will it speed up? If so are there any recommendations for SSDs?

Yes noticeably, domestic 5 year old laptop just about any SSD will do assuming SATA the crucial MX or samsung evo are fine.
