Safe mode in Kingston sm2280s3

September 29th, 2021, 9:05

Hello.

Does anyone know the location of the points in the Kingston sm2280s3 drive to put the drive in safe mode.

Thank you in advance

Just a guess, but besides the Phison controller there's a row of small capacitors, the third slot is empty. Not sure.

Is that a Phison PS3108 controller?

Yes this is ps3108, the solution given by @Agrail does not work. After the pads are short, the SSD turns off.

Are you shorting the pads before powering on the SSD?

I would measure the voltages at all the potential shorting points. One of the pads must connect to a ball on the Phison controller, and one of the voltages must be at Vio levels. I would find the Vio supply by measuring the voltages at each of the inductors (the components with a white spot). You could also determine the Vcore and Vio voltages by measuring the tiny bypass capacitors surrounding the controller.

I have some ideas here, but your SSD may use a different approach.

I approached the topic in a different way: I bought a working Goodram C50 disk based on the same chipset, I found a safe mode (3.3V to GPIO0), I desoldered the PS3108 chip, GPIO0 is an E1 ball. In my hard drive I located a vias between the sides of the laminate ... and ... @Agrail actually showed safe mode points ... :( and now another question: do I have a damaged controller or what?

What are the voltages at the inductors?

@fzabkar 1.2V; 1.5V; 1.8V

If the resistances on each rail appear normal with the controller installed, the next place I would look at would be the crystal.
