I do chip-off for my customers every now and then, for unencrypted media. However, nowadays most phones enforce encryption making recovery quite difficult unless you actually repair the damaged phone first. And if you do, recovery would be easier by going through the phone instead of a chip-off (which is time consuming).

So, because anything regarding encryption is way over my head, I have to ask out of curiousity: what's the game plan for you when it comes to chip-off recovery of a completely dead and unrepairable phone (say broken motherboard, or whatever)? You got a single NAND-chip in front of you with encrypted data and you need to extract it, how would you do?

Some of them are manageable (encrypted i mean depends on the phone android ver. for example. Apple IOS diff. story)

As an easier way >>>>> Swap Board = move nand to another pcb

You can go for the unlocking pcb (unlimited unlocks): http://unixgtc.com/wp/smartware-password-unlocking-pcb/

Or contact us for more details if needed for one case.

What exactly does this do? I'm trying to unlock some WD/HGST 10TB drives that originally were in external enclosures that used a board like one of those. (Drives worked fine until user tried to format them to 4kn from 512e--not drive is permanently locked and even secure erase doesn't execute.)

That's it? The encryption keys are not taken from the hardware, like IOS does?

CPU and NAND need to be transferred to a working phone motherboard.
