Of course I found this forum searching online in a moment of despair.
I want to say hi as first time poster and thank you to anyone than can help me.

A Crucial MX500 died yesterday. Upon disassembly I discovered that the regulator/converter
U500 is burning hot. My question is about that component, since what it does will determine
the course of action. If it's only a regulator I can try to remove it it and use a wire-brige,
otherwise I will to replace it.
Also if anyone is familiar with this new type of Crucial board and their fault I will appreciate
any recommendation.

U500 (the 12 pin chip in the left) is burning, C674, C675, C676, C500 and C673 measure
as shorted. 5V are present at R1 pads (component is not present). No voltages measured
at L501.

There appears to be a short to ground in one or more of the major components. Test the small bypass capacitors around and underneath the MCU, SDRAM and NAND flash. This will tell you which of these chips is being powered from the shorted supplies.

C674, C675, C676, C500 and C673 appear to be associated with two different supplies, but both supplies are being generated by U500. I don't know whether this is pointing to U500 as the culprit, but measuring the other capacitors will give us more information.

I measured all caps on the board. The two rows of capacitors at the left/right of each NAND are shorted as well.
No other instances of shorting found. Two lonely caps on the revers side of the board and next to the remaining NAND's tested as well.

Indeed, C676 was in short. Replaced and all the data was successfully recovered.

So, all 4 capacitors were connected to the same supply??? Normally I test for shorts at the inductors to detect the affected supply rails. Then I look for shorted caps.

Five actually, C674, C675, C676, C500 and C673.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but in a similar position here. Got the exact same SSD (MX500, 1TB, PCB marking: -23-A1) , and for me cap C6 was shorted. To begin with, once putting power on the PCB it hit the current limit on the power supply I had attached it to, but suddenly it stopped drawing current completely. Now, after removing C6 i it is still the same, so wondering if anyone got some input on which component to check (swap) next?

I haven't found any other shorted caps using the multimeter.

Check U510.

Vin and Vout should both be 5V. If there is no Vout, and if there is no short, you can bridge Vin and Vout to bypass this IC.

Thanks for the suggestion. Checked now, and not even 5V on Vin on U510. But will dig a bit further. Really annoying, all of this.

Tried bridging and put power on the ssd, and it started to draw current. Removed the bridge and it still did it, so copying the data now while it is still powered. Thanks again.
