No, don't short it yet. You still haven't told us where the diode is connected. Is there a marking code on it? Where is the 4.4V coming from?
Measure the resistance of the resistor on your patient and donor.

That must mean that the "NL" LDO must getting its power from 5Vin rather than 5Vout. I wonder if the heating that you sensed was actually coming from the resistor rather than the diode. On another Crucial SSD, there was a 10 ohm resistor in series with the supply to the MSP430.
