Post subject:  Dead SAMSUNG PM871

Hello everyone

I have a Samsung PM871 512G that has recently failed. BIOS can't detect it, and Win10 stuck at startup.

I tried to check it with WinHex by connecting the dead SSD via USB adapter. It can't be read due to Data Error (CRC).

I also tried to boot with another SAMSUNG SSD to start the Win10, and hot swapping to the dead PM871.
The PM871 can be detected by CrystalDiskInfo as below, basic information is ok but SMART is empty.

My guess is that there are some error in SSD firmware. So I tried to reflash the firmware.
Dell never release any version of PM871 OEM firmware, I have to use the Lenovo update tool by modify the model identification script.

Firmware update successful, but nothing changed.

At last I tried shorting the pins to enable SSD safe mode, but I can't do anything in this mode.

Is there any way to fix it?
Many thanks in advance.

I can't help with your problem, but can you explain how did you modify the script? I have PM871 (HP OEM) and try to put the Lenovo firmware on it.

Hi paro
If you got the same Lenovo update toolkit fwsd48.zip
You can find a file "fwwinsd.pro" in the package, then open it with Notepad. You can find all SSD type the toolkit supported.
Find the group SAMSUNG PM871 and add your device information in the following list, save the file and run the fwwinsd.exe again.

BUT, on my disk it doesn't work

As I understand, I have to load a temporary Firmware before update, if not the Firmware will never be flash successful by any toolkit...

Why do you need to do so?
Imagine you have holey sneakers and you want them to become like new giving them to laundry.

If you got that far with Winhex wouldn't try cloning it instead not have been a more logical next step? Or didn't it read any sectors at all (I can not tell from your screenshot)?

I think Winhex is not reading any sectors correctly, this SSD looks like a firmware issue, it is not booting properly.
