I did a physical inspection using a USB microscope. the diode does seem dark , suspect it is burnt but not sure.

I didn't measure a volage across it though. But here are the ones I did measure. My Fluke meter doesn't have a precision measurements as it seems.

v1 - 0v
v2 - 1v
v3 = 2v
v4 - 3v
v5- 2v
v6 - 1v
vBoost - 12v
vax -1v
vbx - 2v
vay - 1v
vby - 2v

V1 looks bad, but your measurements don't give me much confidence. You should select a lower range on your meter.

The diode is OK -- it is producing the correct boost voltage (12V).

Ok trying to understand the problem with the drive. Wondering how come the ssd size at least was reported when it is inside a USB based enclosure and it wasn't even detected while directly connected on the SATA port of the LSI controller I've in my PC. As fzabkar said, it is very well that one of the NANDs is bad which is probably making the controller not allowing the access. Then the question is why the firmware is not allowing the access to the good NANDs ? probably f/w is not written for that ?
Going to check the voltages and get to the UART.

If you see capacity, your controller is ok.
It gets bsy when trying to read because he is doing background operations. Terminal is locked, but you can see output.

It is easy to recover the data in that case, but since you want to research I will let you go for it :)

Remember, terminal is your friend.

Sounds optimistic and hopes are up now :)

I'm not sure what you meant by Terminal. How does one can recover the data through the Terminal?
Would you like to explain please?

Thanks

Terminal is RxTx.
You won't recover data from it, but you can see what is happening on the controller.

Connecting to 2 pins UART next to JTAG (5) pins I get some garbage spits out on the terminal. When I short the safe mode pins ( next to UART) and connect the disk back to USB port, I get no output on the terminal and disk won't appear in "diskmr". As soon as remove the short, I see the same garbage spit on the screen and the disk appears in the "diskmgr".

Not sure what could be wrong here. Do I have to short it for a long period > 30 mins ?

Oh my boy... There is no need to short it.

First use speed 115200, the garbage you see is because you use incorrect speed. Second, wait for terminal to stop spitting and report back.

Well I tried 115200 8N1 and then reduced the speed down up to 9600 but nothing helped. Then I thought that UART might get activated in the safe mode which is activated by shorting the safe mode pins. So either way, I didn't see a proper output on the puty.

Use 115200 speed

Yes,I did use 115200 8N1. I had a typo earlier.

Are you using 3.3v or 1.8v on terminal? If 3.3 try 1.8v.
If still nothing happens connect ground pin also.

I was using 3.3v and tried 1.8v with GND no avail. For some reason, now the drive is not seen anymore in the "diskmgr".

Here are the voltages I measured again

V1 - 1.11v
V2 - 1.26v
V3 - 0.09v
V4 - 3.02v
V5 - 1.87v
V6 - 1.10v
Vax - 1.26v
Vay - 1.26v
Vbx - 0v
Vby - 0v
Vboost - 12.17v

With power turned off, measure the resistance between V3 and ground. Perhaps one of components on this rail is shorted.

Also test for shorts at Vbx and Vby.

Can you show me a picture of the device you are using as terminal?

V3 - GND - 11 M Ohms. Vby - GND sems short. Wonder if there is circuit diagram of this board somewhere?

Set the hardware with a jumper on 1.8v connect with a 115200 baud rate, open putty, then power on device with a sata power cable.

This means that the PMIC is OK. The short is in one the components that are powered from this supply. Hopefully you have a shorted capacitor, otherwise the damage is in one of the major ICs.

Use your meter to test the resistance of the capacitors. There may be several that will measure shorted.

BTW, I hope you didn't short the wrong pads. One of those would be a 1.8V supply. Also, I hope you didn't connect your SSD to the adapter's VCC pin.

My advice is not to power up the SSD until you have identified and corrected the short, otherwise you risk killing your PMIC or load switch.

Perhaps it would be prudent to know where @silcontool is connecting the terminal to.

@Lardman I am assuming he is connecting on the right place.
